Defensins are AMPs known for their antibacterial activity (elimination or total inhibition of the growth of these microorganisms), and several roles have been attributed to them in relation to periodontal diseases, such as inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria, promoting the healing of periodontal tissues, promoting bone healing, and serving as a potential indicator of the severity of periodontal disease (42). This evidence concerns the gene ADSL and periodontal disorder.
