We also observed, that larger ligands tend to preferentially bind in the conserved active site location of SLC22A2. Based on these evaluations, it can be deduced that T2DM patients should be cautious with the usage of over-the-counter drugs since it may lead to Metformin accumulation in the blood, resulting in increased lactate concentration and the increased likelihood of the development of MALA.
