Experiments performed on wild-type, STAT2-/- (lacking type I and III IFN signaling), and IL28R-α -/- (lacking IFN type III signaling) hamsters showed that STAT2 signaling is a double-edged sword: on the one hand, it restricts viral dissemination, but, on the other hand, it causes severe pneumonia in SARS-CoV-2-infected hamsters [103].
