The canonicalrole of AR is to reduce aldehydes into their respective sugar alcoholsvia the polyol pathway.63 AR activity isdependent on NADPH and exhibits a higher substrate selectivity andpreference than ALDH, particularly for MG, thus making it more efficientat MG breakdown than ALDH.64,65 AR is associated withthe development of diabetic complications, such as cardiovascularand renal diseases (reviewed in ref (65)).
