Hepatic insulin resistance causes increased glucose production from the liver owning to the failure of insulin signal to modulate the transcription factor foxo1, and thus fails to suppress transcription of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxy kinase (PEPCK or PCK1) and the gluconeogenesis pathway (Peng et al., 2020; Ge et al., 2021).
