As the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) was found to be frequently mutated and/or overexpressed in HNSCC, which was associated with a rather adverse prognosis (8), chemotherapy in combination with the EGF-R blocking antibody cetuximab is currently employed for the treatment of recurrent disease, but with moderate success rates. This evidence concerns the gene EGFR and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
