These mitochondrial alterations could be a consequence of the hepatic disease since it is known that cirrhosis has been associated with elevated activity of CCO (Krähenbühl and Reichen, 1992), and liver damage can provoke oxidative stress since it is linked with the production of free radicals that influence the balance between free radicals and antioxidative mechanisms (Méndez et al., 2009; Cichoz-Lach and Michalak, 2014). The gene discussed is RYR1; the disease is liver disorder.
