INS and diabetes mellitus: Diabetes mellitus is a disease of excess glucose in the plasma, qualitative and quantitative abnor-malities of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, characteristic pathological changes in nerves and small blood vessels, and intensification of atherosclerosis [2] and is characterized by either a total or partial loss of insulin secretion and/or resistance to insulin action leading to a chronic state of hyperglycemia in the blood [3, 4].
