Five of these genes (TRAF3IP2, MED19, BDNF, FUT2, and IZUMO1) were common hits in more than one of the paired disorders, with the 3’ untranslated region (UTR) of FUT2 previously reported by Jang et al. to be associated with continuous alcohol and psychiatric disorder phenotypes [48], and a cross-disorder analysis of pleiotropic SNPs on AUD and SZ by Johnson et al. that identified 55 convergent loci also reported FUT2 as a nearby gene to one of these loci [39]. This evidence concerns the gene BDNF and psychiatric disorder.
