Proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) or interferon gamma (IFN-γ), have been shown to be key mediator in lacrimal gland inflammation associated with Sjogren’s syndrome affecting OXTR expression and signaling capacity and impair MEC contraction critically impeding lacrimal gland fluid release (14). Here, TNF is linked to Sjogren syndrome.
