Massive production of cytokines, one of the hallmarks of sepsis, may impair cellular control of vitamin C absorption, leading to depletion of intracellular vitamin C. Subramanian et al. demonstrated that lipopolysaccharide decreases intestinal vitamin C absorption by downregulating expression of sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter-1 and -2 (SVCT-1 and SVCT-2) [29]. The gene discussed is SLC23A2; the disease is Sepsis.
