Although we were able to verify—in our in vitro setting—the hypothesis of Zimmer et al. that the presence of the macrophage cholesterol transporters ABCA1 and ABCG1 is not required for 2HPβCD-mediated cholesterol efflux [4], our in vivo atherosclerosis findings thus do not replicate those of Zimmer et al. (2HPβCD-mediated regression induction) [4] and rather provide additional support for the conclusion of Kim et al. that treatment with 2HPβCD is ineffective in inducing atherosclerosis regression (null effect of 2HPβCD) [5]. Here, ABCG1 is linked to atherosclerosis.
