Since there is no approved CaMKII inhibitor for clinical use (Pellicena and Schulman, 2014; Nassal et al., 2020), we attempted to target upstream NMDAR-mediated Ca2+ influx using memantine, an NMDAR agonist clinically used for Alzheimer's disease (Parsons et al., 2007) and well-tolerated in children (Findling et al., 2007; Bouhadoun et al., 2021).
