Human diabetic hearts show upregulation of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and cardiac pyroptosis when compared with nondiabetic heart tissues, and in human ventricular cardiomyocytes, hyperglycemia (35 mM glucose) apparently induces increased NLRP3, caspase-1, and IL-1β protein expression, concomitantly accompanied by obvious cardiomyocyte pyroptosis [25], thereby leading to a loss of contractile units and cardiac dysfunction. The gene discussed is NLRP3; the disease is Hyperglycemia.
