ACE2 and viral infectious disease: This study shows that some cells within the human embryo (1) express and correctly localize factors required for SARS-CoV-2 entry, (2) are permissive to viral entry via the S-ACE2 ligand-receptor system, (3) are susceptible to live virus infection, which can produce cytopathic effects, and (4) may be protected against SARS-CoV-2 infection by the zona pellucida.
