Using an LPS induced IBD model in rat, they found that pretreatment of alpha-MG significantly reduced all the pathological changes caused by LPS including detachment of intestinal villi, deformation of intestinal epithelial cell nuclei and swelling of mitochondria, and these effects of alpha-MG was exerted by suppressing the expression of NLRP3, caspase 1, IL-18, and IL-1β. This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and inflammatory bowel disease.
