Using skin fibroblasts from PD patients, a recent study found that more than 94% of patient cell lines were unable to extract Miro1 from the OMM following depolarization, indicating that defects in Miro removal could be the mechanism driving the alpha-synuclein-induced delay in mitophagy observed in animal and cellular models (Hsieh et al., 2019). The gene discussed is SNCA; the disease is Parkinson disease.
