ACE2 and viral infectious disease: Initially, it was speculated that endothelial injury was due to direct viral infection (48), but recent evidence demonstrated that endothelial cells present low Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression and are resistant to SARS-CoV-2 infection, supporting the involvement of an indirect mechanism of endothelial injury in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 vasculopathy (47, 48).
