As is well known, BDNF is a key mediator in retinal homeostasis, involved in the attenuation of retinal cell death induced by hypoxia [32], in the protection of the inner retinal layer during the aging process [33], in the survival of retinal ganglion cells (RCG) in glaucoma experimental models [34,35,36,37,38,39], and in the preservation of mitochondrial function during the degeneration of retinal photoreceptors [7]. Here, BDNF is linked to glaucoma.
