MAPT and tauopathy: Tauopathies, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD), are neurodegenerative disorders involving the spread of toxic forms of tau protein, resulting in characteristic aggregates and cytoplasmic inclusions that impair normal neuronal functioning (Irwin et al., 2013; Shi et al., 2016; Orr et al., 2017; Polanco et al., 2018b).
