The genes BRCA1 (OMIM accession number: 113705) and BRCA2 (OMIM accession number: 600185) were discovered in the mid‐1990s and are considered “high penetrance” because mutations confer, by some estimates, a greater than 80% lifetime risk for female breast cancer (Easton, 1999, 2015; Kapoor, 2015; Kuchenbaecker, 2017). This evidence concerns the gene BRCA1 and breast carcinoma.
