Having confirmed that both the Lcn2 transcript and corresponding protein increase during A. bacteremia (Figs 2 and 3 and S1 Fig; S5 through S8 Tables), and that LCN2 impacts iron homeostasis by the bacteria in vitro (Figs 4 and 5), we endeavored to determine the overall influence of this host innate immune protein on infection.
