Inflammation has been demonstrated to elevate hepcidin production via the interleukin 6 (IL-6)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) signaling pathway to modulate the systemic iron metabolism, where inflammation is induced by bacterial or viral infection, obesity, and diabetes during pregnancy [23]. This evidence concerns the gene STAT3 and obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
