Regarding the induction of inflammation, SARS-CoV-2 causes acute respiratory distress syndrome by activating the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, which activates interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18 via caspase-1 (11, 12), and the NLRP3 inflammasome is known to be an important molecule involved in intestinal homeostasis (13). Here, NLRP3 is linked to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
