ACE2 and COVID-19: SARS-CoV-2 relies on its main receptor, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), to enter cells, which is abundantly present in the human epithelia of the lung, small intestine, and colon.(20, 21) Reports have shown that a notable proportion of patients with COVID-19 develop gastrointestinal symptoms and nearly half of patients have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in their fecal samples.(22); further, airborne transport of infectious COVID-19 aerosols from wastewater have been linked to viral transmission.(23)
