TOMM40 and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease: A study involving postmortem brain analysis concluded that by recognizing and allowing the importation of nuclear-encoded proteins, M40 can induce dynamic mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons to increase the risk of Alzheimer disease along with the upregulation of TOMM40 messenger RNA in the frontal lobe of a postmortem Alzheimer disease brain compared with controls [24].
