Since ZFP36L1 and ASCL1 are expressed in mutually exclusive subpopulations in mouse SCLC tumors (Fig. 3g) and ZFP36L1 re-expression causes loss of neuroendocrine differentiation in SCLC cell lines (Fig. 5), we hypothesized that cells with restored ZFP36L1 expression would acquire markers that resemble the “inflammatory” subtype. The gene discussed is ASCL1; the disease is small cell lung carcinoma.
