PROM1 and cancer: To investigate the impact of the IFN-I → IFNAR axis on the appearance of cancer cells with a stem-like phenotype (hereafter referred to as CSCs), we selected a panel of cancer cell lines of distinct origin (epithelial or mesenchymal) and species (human or mouse) and treated them for 72 h with 6 × 103 U ml–1 IFN-I before assessing, by flow cytometry, the levels of prominin 1 (Prom1, best known as CD133), CD24 and CD44 surface markers, whose expression, alone and in combination, has been associated with putative CSCs.
