More than 1/3 of the patients coming for non-cardiac surgery who present with hypertension may be receiving angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs)/angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) which are commonly prescribed as first-line anti-hypertensive medications, the advantage being that these drugs modulate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis and are considered cardioprotective [3]. This evidence concerns the gene ACE and hypertensive disorder.
