High expression of NLRP3, caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18 and over-activated NLRP3 inflammasome were found in skin biopsy specimen from SSc patients and showed a positive correlation with modified Rodnan skin thickness score (mRSS), a measure of skin involvement, in which higher scores represent severe skin fibrosis [59]. This evidence concerns the gene NLRP3 and systemic sclerosis.
