A potential link between inflammation, imbalanced glutamate-dopamine interaction, and post-synaptic changes is supported by recent results showing a significant increase in mRNA encoding complement receptors (C5ar1, CR1, CR3a), regulators (CD55, C59), and proteins (C3, C3b, C4) in the plasma of schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls. This evidence concerns the gene C3 and schizophrenia.
