PDE5A and cardiovascular disorder: Given the increase in PDE5 levels observed in cardiovascular diseases [52] and in light of the growing evidence pointing to a cardioprotective effect of PDE5 inhibitors in ischemia/reperfusion injuries, mostly through the activation of the mitochondrial respiratory chain [53,54,55], the demonstration of the ability of MmPDE5A2 to influence redox status and energy balance in yeast lays the foundation for the development of targeted studies in mammalian cells.
