The observation of increased peroxynitrite generation in the glomeruli of these mice is in line with our previous report on experimental type 2 diabetic nephropathies, where reduced renal Sirt3 expression was associated with the hyperacetylation of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase 2 and a concomitant increase in glomerular oxidative stress and mitochondrial abnormalities mainly found in podocytes [20]. Here, SIRT3 is linked to type 2 diabetes nephropathy.
