Strikingly, 50% of the p16/HPV DNA-positive/24-miRNA-negative cases were oral cavity tumours and, according to the E6/E7 RNA expression data, 20% involved HPV subtypes other than HPV16 (HPV33/HPV68), indicating the influence of tumour localisation and HPV variant on 24-miRNA signature expression patterns.
