The gene SLC2A2 encoding the low affinity/high capacity GLUT2 glucose transporter protein, has previously been shown to play a key role in islet function (Thorens, 2015) and common variants in the SLC2A2 gene are associated with T2D, insulin secretion and glycemic response to metformin therapy in recently diagnosed T2D patients (Rathmann et al, 2019). This evidence concerns the gene SLC2A2 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
