Parkinson’s disease (PD) is thesecond most common neurodegenerativedisorder, with over 6 million people worldwide suffering from thiscondition.1,2 Age is a major risk factor of PD, affectingabout 1–2% of people over the age of 65 and 4% of people overthe age of 85.3,4 PD is characterized by a lossof dopaminergic neurons from the substantia nigra pars compacta and by the presence of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites in neurons, which are predominantly composed of aggregates of the 14 kDa intrinsicallydisordered protein, α-synuclein,5 and lipid membranes.6 This evidence concerns the gene SNCA and Parkinson disease.
