In fact, it has been demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 infection up-regulates vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR-1, also known as FLT1), endoglin (ENG, the main antiangiogenic factor involved in preeclampsia), vasoconstrictive peptides [Endothelin 1 (END1), urotensin 2 (UTS2), angiotensin 1 (AGT)], phosphodiesterase 5A (PDE5A; a nitric oxide modulator) and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-α (HIF-1α; a key factor involved in placental invasion and increased in preeclampsia) that are the main factors involved also in preeclampsia onset [74,75]. This evidence concerns the gene ENG and preeclampsia.
