CD44 and cancer: There are several reports of use of HA asa targeting agent to deliver therapeutics12,13 or miRNAs14 to CD44-expressing tumors.CD44 itself is often overexpressed in various cancer types includingboth breast15 and colorectal.16 Of particular interest is that this overexpressionis most prominent in the cancer stem-like cells within individualtumors;17 these cells are strongly associatedwith drug resistance and metastases and therefore represent the mostimportant tumor cell population to target therapeutically.
