As an FDA-approved treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, auranofin targets thioredoxin reductase-1 (Txnrd1), and was repurposed as a potential antitumor drug to effectively induce DNA damage, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, cell growth inhibition, and apoptosis in aggressive B-cell lymphomas, especially in TP53-mutated or PTEN-deleted lymphomas. Here, TXNRD1 is linked to lymphoma.
