In PF, autoantibodies bind to Dsg1 (desmoglein 1), a desmoglein protein highly expressed in the superficial layers of the epidermis and essential for adhesion between neighboring keratinocytes, and result in the loss of cell-cell adhesion and the blistering of skin (Anhalt et al., 1982; Korman et al., 1989; Rock et al., 1989). The gene discussed is DSG1; the disease is pemphigus foliaceus.
