Internal tandem duplication (ITD) mutation in the Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 gene (FLT3/ITD) causes a significant increase in aerobic glycolysis through AKT-mediated upregulation of mitochondrial hexokinase 2 (HK2) and renders leukemia cells highly dependent on glycolysis (28). The gene discussed is FLT3; the disease is leukemia.
