For a long time, the treatment for DN has been limited to angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) or angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) (Doshi and Friedman, 2017) although sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors (Heerspink et al., 2018), including canagliflozin (Perkovic et al., 2019), dapagliflozin (Heerspink et al., 2020), and empagliflozin (Wanner et al., 2016), exhibit novel and promising benefits for improving renal function in patients with DN. This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and liver dysplastic nodule.
