Several biomarkers have been evaluated for their potential to discriminate between benign and malignant pelvic masses, including CA125, which is a high molecular weight transmembrane mucin that is overexpressed in 80% of epithelial ovarian cancers [9], and HE4, which is a protein secreted by epithelial cells that shows increased expression in the majority of ovarian cancers [10].
