Gal-1 was found upregulated in the intraocular microenvironment of diabetic retinopathic patients along with the progression of clinical stages of retinopathy but not in the intraocular microenvironment of non-diabetic retinopathic patients [3], indicating a role for Gal-1 in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetes or related hyperglycemia, a primum movens in its production. This evidence concerns the gene LGALS1 and diabetic retinopathy.
