Specifically, studies revealed that microRNA-21 (5’UAGCUUAUCAGACUGAUGUUGA3’) activates cell proliferation in HeLa cells and its inhibition suppressed cell multiplication by increased expression of tumor suppressor gene called programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4), an apoptotic protein, indicating that microRNA-21 is a key oncogenic molecule that is upregulated in cervical cancer [28, 33]. The gene discussed is PDCD4; the disease is cervical carcinoma.
