The first treatment option to be used in the treatment of mild and moderate ulcerative colitis is 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalazine), which includes oral and rectal mesalazine formulations and oral pro-drugs (sulfasalazine, olsalazine, and balsalazide)3,16, and, depending on the disease severity, oral prednisone, intravenous corticosteroids, ciclosporin, tacrolimus, and TNF-α antibody infliximab can be used.
