To find the in vivo relevance of these findings, we determined p21, p16, and p53 levels in the brachiocephalic artery of ApoE−/− mice with persistent hyperglycaemia (induced by low-dose streptozotocin, STZ injection for 5 days, a model of type 1 DM) or hyperlipidaemia (induced by a high-fat diet, HFD) for 22 weeks [16].
