Analysis of the quantitative data indicated a significant main effect of sex (p < 0.05) and post hoc analysis indicated that the percentage of iron+ Iba1+ cells was significantly increased in male AD patients compared with male controls (*p < 0.05; Figure 2D), in female AD patients compared with female controls (***p < 0.001); staining was also significantly increased in sections from female AD patients compared with sections from male AD patients (++p < 0.01).
