ELMO gene variants have been associated with diabetic kidney disease (Shimazaki et al., 2005; Bento et al., 2008; Leak et al., 2009; Hanson et al., 2010; Wu et al., 2013; Alberto Ramirez-Garcia et al., 2015; Liu et al., 2015; Turki et al., 2018), especially for ELMO1, which promotes the development of nephropathy in diabetic mice (Hathaway et al., 2016), and was suggested to promote the development of glomerular injury through dysregulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) (Shimazaki et al., 2006). This evidence concerns the gene ELMO1 and diabetic kidney disease.
