MMP14 and neoplasm: Membrane type-1matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP, also known asMMP-14) is a cell surface enzyme overexpressed in a range of cancers, including sarcoma, and is associated with tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis.14 MT1-MMPbelongs to a family of MMPs that degrade components of the extracellularmatrix (ECM).15 The principal role of MT1-MMPinvolves degradation and remodeling of collagen and proteoglycans;however, it also activates other proteolytic MMPs, which themselvesdegrade ECM components, leading to increased invasion of the basementmembrane.
